Makes sense now i didn't know the tilt column came without the splines where it fits onto the rack. I guess as long as there was enough rotational movement in the rack to mount the column where you wanted it you could weld the Mini splines onto the end of the Flaming River column but having the coupling would (depending on the internals) ease dismantling the column if you ever had to at a later date.

What I was wondering about was using a stock column and the u-joint, from what I'm gathering is that at 2.5" it is going to bring the column/wheel that much closer to you.

If a column is modified (lower outer housing cut 5-6" away at bottom and the shaft cut an a u-joint installed), I've seen this done on a race car and it worked well for the driver but for liability reasons I wouldn't resell a car with a modified column, no matter how well it was built.

Drop bracket, tilt column, sure.

Looks like you have a nice set up.

You could cut the splines off the end and re install new ones after trimming the shaft 2.5" a good welder should be able to accomplish this. The problem would be the amount of room left to get in and out of the drivers seat which is why the u joint is better suited near the top of the column i guess.

I still like the look of the tilt column and the ability to get the wheel at the perfect driving angle. The column is still sittin' in my garage in the original box. I also have the correct Mini U-joint and steering wheel adapters if anyone's interested.

 Rosebud,

Is that universal joint correct for the rack and a stock mini column? if so I am definitely interested in the UJ, what are you asking for it?

Thanks,

Sean

Sean—I can’t recall if that UJ adapts Mini rack → Mini column, or Mini rack → Flaming River tilt-column. I don’t have a stock Mini column to check it with. And if the UJ fits the tilt-column, that means the guy that bought my column on eBay will be contacting me soon. S*it! Not to mention that I’’m gonna take a beating on the shipping charge. eBay is overrated. And don’t get me started on their website. Ugh!

Here’s what I came up with instead of using the tilt-column. I had this set up fabricated by the shop that did my fuel cell. It looks like stainless but it’s actually nickel plated steel. Nickel has more of a vintage look in my opinion, and it’s cheaper than chrome.

Had I’d seen this very cool drop bracket at //www.dsnclassics.co.uk, I might have kept the tilt-column and hung it from this bad boy.

Looking at Jemal's picture i thought the wheel looked high and thinking it was a good job the Momo wheel fitted on without an adapter but maybe it is just the camera angle, that being said i am sure it works well for Jemal and like he said he can make the custom bracket to suit the driver.

I saw a Mini with a Chevy S10 tilt column installed in it a few years back and it fitted well. The spline ends are available from a Mini supplier in Australia.

I missed this topic when it first came around!  Yes my column is a Flaming River stainless tilt column available from Summit.  The trick part is the bracket custom fit sandwiched between the dash 'tray' and the pedal box making it very rigid, and for me, low enough  to put the seats back and completely do away the VW bus feel of the stock arrangement.  Mini Mania is not interested in selling my kit, but I will custom design and build one for anyone interested.  (custom as in how tall are you?... how far back if any do you want the seats? Right or left hand drive? Want to do a tach mount like mine?  The MOMO wheel fits the common GM spline with no adapter hub!  You don't need that honking 'Mountney' or 'SWABM" adapter!

For you 'originality wonks', I also have my original complete and perfect Mark 1 Cooper S column, all rebuilt with new bushings for sale, with or without the turn switch and shrouds. Sorry already gave away the original wheel.... Email me for details.

The two nuts ( inside the car ) are about 5cm apart (from memory), one on top of the other.  Same on both sides of foot well.  If lowering a steering column, you need to losen these so that the rack can rotate slightly with the column being lowered.

( they don't hold the "column"....that must have been a typo....they hold the rack )
