Rick, I have an unfair advantage in that I have already started mine....

It has been in storage since my divorce and I was planning on sellling it as it was, but a good friend has commissioned me to build it up for him. Alas, I am building another Mini that won't be mine, but it is being saved and going to a very good home.

Maybe THEN I will do one of mine...

Apart from the 12" wheels which I think look nasty on an estate, I will be following this build closely.

Sean, we have all the steel (I got the sedan heel board - to be modified - from you at Vancouver ABFM...when was that??) and it will get into my buddies shop in November.  If it is to be a race, hopefully sooner rather than later.  However, I want the body to be assembled with care and will be assisting most of the time.

I think I have built rear trailing arms as well to go with subbie...jeez, it has been so long I'm going to have to focus....

Spitz..

My theory is that 'Lucky' was built from the good front end & the good back end of 2 crash test Minis after they evaluated the switch from internal to external tanks.  Supported by the observation of welds at a high end restoration shop in Metro Vancouver that said, "They are so good, they could only have happened at the factory."

Will be looking closely at the A pillars and door fit to see if there is any evidence to support that view.

Mini Forum advice says not a chance.  We'll see.

If it were all easy, what would be the fun?

Awesome, I have just started building a ribbed roof Countryman. I have had it for a number of years, built sometime in 65.

Needs all of the standard sheet metal. Wings, front end, passenger floor, sills, rear corners...

Wanna race?

Thats odd....an external tank car being built 9 cars before an internal tank car.

Close numbers, cool...I imagine that week they had both bodies and both tanks in the same area

From BMI Heritage Trust - build date was July 19, 1961, dispatch date July 21, 1961 - VIN: A-AW7-L/140141 (also on VIN plate)

An early external tank Mini while internal tank Minis were going out the factory door.

(corrected build date was July 19 not 9...VIN number was/is 140141 not 14014...eyes must be getting old)

Push Came to Shove...

DECISION - will rebuild & modify the 1962 Austin Mini Countryman 'Woody', aka 'Lucky'. Lucky to survive being left in a shed in the US Midwest many years ago. Was picked up by Mike K. of Seven Enterprises, was taken on by my late friend Kent S. of Carmichael, Calif., was sold on to Chris H. who legally imported the Woody into Canada. Will get started on the steel work later in November.

Will have a 20 over turbocharged 1275 with 8.4" disc brakes, 12" wheels/tyres...have many of the bits but will need more including a new wiring harness, windscreen, SU 44 among others...will want to design in ignition boost retard and pay special attention to both oil and coolant temperature management.

Have the new steel and also spare roof & rear quarters, one of which we will use for sure, and extra barn doors. Power unit will be built on the 20 over MG Metro Turbo block we have with new custom crank prepared for this build, new rods, new pistons, new cam, new vernier adjustable cam drive...with power delivered through a 1st time build of an A+ tranny with new shifter forks.

New Wood from The Woodsman has been on the shelf since 2010 in Penticton. New steering rack, new rod change shifter and new fuel tank also wait.

Woody was built in July 1961 and shipped to a Dealer in New York with heater & whitewall tyres...so the VIN is now 54 years old. However, 'Lucky' will be able to move in modern traffic and stop.

We may even sacrifice some old bits for modern items...GPS Speedo/Odo, maybe Heater/AC unit...we'll see.

Still building power from the ancient "A" Series engine!

Should be a great ride when done!

Yes, I'm excited!!
