It was fulltime, used different sized discs instead of a thermostat to control temp,

Manuel:
Do you have more pictures, maybe of the routing of the pipes?
So this was always on?

It was for racing only, HSR, SVRA and a few other vintage race groups do not allow front mounted radiators on Minis.

When you are racing it definately does.

Neat...a double rad set-up. Does it get that hot in Alabama?

Mine mimicked the main radiator idea, dumping out into the right wheel well, had a scoop behind the grille and a shroud around the aux. radiator.

I was hoping Rick would weigh in on this one. His engine bay is a thing of beauty, that I admire. Much more eye-appeal. Still, both setups function similarly. I would've used any old heater core, but had the Mini one here, so used it.
Practically anything would work.
Funny story: Coming back from MME 08 in Maine, the car was running real hot....It was probably 32-35*C and I was sitting at the Maine/NB border, coming back through. I was melting. Pulled up to the window and the 2 very young female customs agents were talking to me....at one point the girl in behind asked me something I couldn't quite hear and I replied "Sorry, I can't hear you, I have the heat on in here and the fan is real noisey".....they never batted an eye and let me go through.
In hindsight, I thought "that was an odd thing for me to say"...and should've raised a flag with them, but didn't. Maybe it was the cuteness of the car?
A week later I installed the extra heater core for improved cooling. I had to keep it @ 50-51mph (much less on hills) the whole way to MME and back.....a Royal PITA....now I can cruise @ 60-65 on the hottest days and no worries.
I also use water-wetter in the rad.
~ 30 minutes in a Mini is more therapeutic than 3 sessions @ the shrink. ~

My original system still works just fine. Facing expected hot weather, with one bolt the aux. rad frame is into the engine bay and the rad is plumbed from the heater takeoff to the lower rad hose via the intake manifold. Comes out with onset of cool weather and heater reconnected.
While installed the rad (GM pickup heater core) can be blocked off easily if not needed (as can an oil cooler).
Plumbing in taps so all can be hooked up would be an interesting refinement. I just plug the heater hoses.
