Thanks for the reply Alex. We would be interested if the cam becomes avalable. Not wanting to pay silly money but surely fair market or better. Like everything this guy has I expect this will be a very nice 997 Cooper. It's going to require a lot of work to restoed the Speedwell Alloy head that came with it. Remove the plug inserts and weld the plug holes then remachine, pull the seats and redo them and resize the chambers to reduce C/R. I have the very early Cosmic wheels as well as a set of reverse steel rims.

As for the 510 cam I have a couple, all have abad lode. If you have time measure lobes from base to nose and see if all intakes are the same as well as all exhaust match each other. The ones I have look fine but do not pass this test. Thanks

I got your mail Steve, and haven't replied yet as I need to talk to my friend with the cam first - it really isn't my cam.

I have what I believe is a pretty decent 510 in the shed that is mine if you're interested in that too.

Alex, I emaied you direct about the NOS cam. Maybe you address has changed. Contact me if you will either way. This guy wants the best result I can give him.

As for UK cams I recieved an email from someone in the know and they were not impressed with the Cooper S and 997 cams being offered. Thanks

Thanks guys, I'm sure I have read that info at one time or another. I guess I need to take another look at that source. I did a car for a customer who insisted I use them some time back. I ended up sending parts back due to quality issues. Did I hear they have had a change of management and things are not better? No matter I'll continue to look into having some cams done. I just won't buy a bunch more cores.

Hi Steve, Minisport UK also sell the stock 1275 Cooper S AEG 510 as ST 510. Smooth idle unlike the 2A 948 ST 997 cam:

997 cam = 3/8" lobes and 1 machined ring between the 1st and 2nd lobe.

Minisport UK still sells a 2A948 (they call it ST948 now) cam regrind, which is what was used in the 997 Cooper.

Since I'm currently doing 997 Cooper project I'd be interested. Maybe we should take this off the board. I'm sure you realize they are 3/8 wide lobes. This is a special car for a special friend. Let's talk. Thanks

How much would an NOS 997 cam be worth ?

A friend has one still wrapped in the original greasepaper tucked away in a treasure box.

Al, Don was asking for cam cores some time back. We can talk about it via email I have no desire to compete. Alex, you are among friends you can tell us how you really feel. I agree if they are not sent out and properly heat treated and straightened they are junk. I have often wondered if parkerizing comes in a spray can.

FYI, I bought one of the new super race cams from the UK cross drilled new blank so on. I had a tool made to machine the head spring seats to get exact installed height and used ZDDP rich oil and the supplied lube. I sprung for the lifters and springs. Ran it one dyno session and one race weekend. While changing trannys I noticed the lobes did not look right. Pulled it out and returned it to UK they said I messed up. They didn't even return my core.

I just want a couple of Cooper S and 997 cams. Maybe I'll just have done what I have current need for.

I've had good/great luck with regrinds from Schneider Cams-- they charge the public $100-120 to regrind an A-series cam and they have several of their own profiles to choose from or you can have them grind what you want.

I've been running the regrinds for 2 years in the LeMons cars (with arguably low mileage but lots of continuous usage when they are in use) and no appreciable wear. New lifters and VR1 oil and I used their cam lube when installing them. Not using very high lift figures and std rockers with double springs.  I've used them in another couple of non-lemons motors but they haven't been apart since install so can't say how those are doing/lasting.

I wouldn't touch another regrind with a poopy stick, either an old school long duration or especially a 'new' high lift short duration cam.

They just don't last.

I have been buying up cam cores for some time. Most if not all have at least one lobe with an issue. Not damaged just don't look right over the nose. I realize the SW5 SW12 and some other numbers are all the rage. I'm doing engine restoration work. Early Cooper and Cooper S. The Cooper S 510 and the 997 Cooper cams are NLA. I'm talking with a cam grinder about regrinding some shafts for me. I have the correct cores for some cams and think I can have some ground on the other cores I have. They will be heat treated unlike some regrinds we used to see. The other option is new cams on new blanks. Any thoughts or interest? My only interest is classic grinds for classic rebuilds.
