I had a 1990 mini that had a hose connection to the lower rad hose that was for 5/8" hose on one side and 1/2" hose, to go into the heater return of a normal mini lower rad hose, on the other.  It certainly looked factory.

It doesn't hurt to make your own T to return heater coolant to the lower rad hose out of metal.  This then excludes the failure point on the lower rad hose.

To answer your question racingflea yes the copper hose connection is right for a 68 heater set up. Later heaters had the two pipes out of the right side and are 5/8" connections and also had a different heater valve assembly that is connected to the thermostat sandwich plate rather than the left side of the cylinder head. What you need will depend on what year engine and heater but either way it can be made to work quite simply. You can buy the hose whether 1/2" or 5/8" cut to any length at a local auto parts store.

It would be a 1/2" hose splicer tube.

I agree with the described way to join two hoses. My car's got it too.
