Correct me if I am wrong but... I thought the difference between automotive oil and motorcycle oil was that motorcycle oil is specially formulated so it does not soak into the clutch to prevent slippage. So maybe sythetic motorcycle oil would be ok in a auto trans mini?

Yes i have heard of a working auto box that failed after a synthetic oil change. Also heard that after using synthetic oil seals started leaking but heard others have no problems when using synthetic and claims that the gearbox is smoother, I guess it just depends on the car and the age of the seals.

I will say don't use synthetic in you auto box as the clutch packs will slip and get chewed up. It seems like the synthetic lubericates so well that the clutches can no longer engage fully.

I don't want to start a pissing match, but the Synthetic argument has been argued for years. I've been running synthetic for 3 years now, and haven't had a single problem. My seals are in great condition, and my oil temps/noise has reduced.

With that said, bike oil shouldn't have any problem in your motor, but double check the ZDDP content before using anything. Modern oils don't need as much ZDDP, but ZDDP is an anti-corrosion additive which also thermally stabilizes the oil and neutralizes oil acids which can etch and corrode crank/cam bearings and really do some serious damage. Especially in a sump shared oil system like classic minis.

I don't know of any cons for using bike engine oil but it is claimed Mini's do not do well with synthetic oils.

Spotted some Motul 20W50 100% synthetic oil for 4 stroke motorcycles at the local BRP/skidoo store, says on the tin "performs well in applications where a single oil lubricates engine and gearbox compartments".

Motul also does 20w50 for classic cars, but this one is mineral and only available on order (here at least).

no idea what the zinc content might be. Price is about 30$ for 2L

what's the pros and cons of using oil designed for bike engines?

thanks
