There is someone who has enough bits to make several 5 speed boxes, he bought all the excess bits, I lost touch with him about 5 yrs ago .

Yes, they were made by KG Engineering in Melbourne (now gone I think). The ones Madmat referred to are these.

It is a 970, but with 280bhp at 8500k. Of course a turbocharger is used - not a supercharger

It's been fun, but this place is done. I have no hatred, and appreciate the good times. But this place now belongs to Tony and his pink mini.

Trying to find the reference to six-speed box, but in the meantime, found this about the 970 motor they used: modified twin overhead cam engine which has been supercharged

He was holding back Dave until next year for the 200mph run, then he will use the other two gears A fantastic accomplishment for a Mini with a frontal area that flows like a brick.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

The video I saw preoviously was defiantely a 4-speeed, not a six speed

This site says there was a racing 6 speed available from Special Tuning agents.

//www.minimania.com/article/611/Mini___Mini_Cooper_FAQ_Part_1

I dimly recollect that those were made by Jack Knight.

Search around, these days you will find people modifying Mini boxes to take sequential gearsets from bikes.  For example, this CBR1100RR gearset conversion discussed on the AUSMINI forum //www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=65033&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30

Maybe that's what the LSR guys did.

JKD did make a 6 speed dog engagement gearbox, I'm sure it was more $$ than the 5 speeds... I saw one in person once, so yes they do exist.

I would think the 970 was to maintain an extended high rpm without sending something through the side of the engine.

Just my $.02

Cheers, Andy

The recent posts about the NZ crew taking a '64 Mini to 156mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats contains some interesting questions - and not as many answers. Where did a 6-speed box come from? Expensive 5-speeds we all know, but six? Also, in the video, what's the driver adjusting while on the run? Something either on the column or on the dash quite close to it. Boost? And, curiously, I think I read this was a 970 motor, so why that choice? (I know the idea was to set under 1-litre record, so that part's understood.)
