NOT true! The base for the 'S' engine was the same as the plain Cooper, but the 'S' version was beefed up considerably to handle the pressure and stress increases of forced induction (supercharging). You'll need to source an 'S' engine, then transfer the 'Works' stuff.

I have a 2003 mini cooper S that has been rebuildt into a works, but this week the engine died. We checked and found out that oil had come into the 3rd sylinder and blew a hole ( im not kidding ) threw the engine.
I checked around and it seems that all minies with the 1.6 engine use the same engine, so i can buy a regulare cooper engine and just replace the works parts from mine to the new one.
Does anyone here have any experience with this?
