As Malcolm suggested, it could be the Waxstat that has failed. However, start the engine and watch the carb during idling. If it is the carb you will see fuel drip down and off the jet. That will indicate a problem with the float valve in the carb. The easiest repair for that is to buy a new Viton tipped needle/seat and replace it.
The lump on the bottom of the carb that the fuel may be dripping off is the Waxstat. It's a device that is supposed to make minor alterations to the mixture based on temperature. If it is the Waxstat that has failed you can replace it with the kit that Malcolm mentioned. There is another fix. Google for "Waxstat conversion" and you will find several articles that explain how to take the wax cartridge out and replace it with a few pennies.

Hi Rob,
Just wanted to say hi and welcome to MM. Good luck with the carb problem.
We are half way to getting my engine out so I can get my tranny fixed after MMW.

That looks as though the waxstat jet (not the piston) has failed, it could also be the needle and seat in the float chamber sticking and running down you really need the air filter housing off to see exactly. You can change the jet for the normal HS red jet, there is a kit available to convert it as the waxstats are prone to failure.
If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

Hello folks,
So the other week I was driving my mini and the engine cut out TWICE. there was a strong smell of gas under the hood but it started ok and i got home. Now on further inspection I have a fuel leak from the bottom of the carb. It's dripping down on to the bulkhead, past the subrame, it's quite bad actually.
??Any ideas what might be causing this? I know nothing when it comes to carbs. ??Naturally, I'm reluctant to actually run the car with this much fuel leaking near the exhaust manifold! Can anyone offer advice as to where the leak might be coming from and how to go about fixing it
Here's a photo of the leak. As you can see, the piston is wet with petrol and the brown stain below is where it's dripping
