As a sidelight (slight pun there) the problem with direct replacement LED bulbs for 1157 application is that they shine straight ahead, in line with the base. There are bulbs that have an array of LEDs that shine to the side as well, and these are the better choice for, say, front turn signals, so that they can be seen toward the side, not just straight ahead. Same can be said of the rear lenses, actually. Expensive, but they really don't burn out.

Interesting.  I ordered from our host about 4 years ago and can not find them any more.  Agree, not a simple install.  Had to reverse the wiring from instructions and add a ballast for them to work correctly.  Also remember that your existing flasher may not work correctly because of the "no-load" characteristics of LED circuits.  I replaced the flasher (from superbrightleds) and added a ballast.  Here's a good video worth watching before you make the switch.

I've done a few LED type swaps and or upgrades. Seems superbright LED's have a higher than expected failure rate (personal experience - won't buy from them) but sometimes theyre the only game in town. Don't alway's like the illumination they provide, they can have a frequency thing to them which kind of bugs me (sim to fluour bulbs) I use bulbs from Fry's if I do single stuff (they are starting to carry 4 to 8 LEDs mounted on PC boards, not quite sure they would be bright enough under an MK1 tail lens yet but have used them for aisle, undercounter and RV lights, worked good.) , it would be expensive to buy the LED.s individually however. Thinking I'm going to tear apart a Harbor Freight fixture and use the PC board with the LED's on it, several different types out there. We have done that on our bus taillights - actually took lens off, tore down an LED fixture and mounted PC board where the rusted out 1157 socket is, Lens is still reflector type. Another thing we have planned to do is mount a round fixture in the lens (cutting whole in old lens and installing LED fixture) So: Places to get a good deal on LED lights is Harborfreight on sale, next is prob Walmart. The lens is not what makes the light red, it is the LED itself.

Jemal - any of those MK1 lights available scratch n dent? I'd see if they are repairable or at least change out some of the LED's. There are LED MK1 fixtures on ebay but they don't look as substantial as the MiniMania ones were but they are a different style of  LED bulb lens

550 lumens, direct fit, I'll let you know how they work.

Wow!  That should get it done!  Looking forward to seeing your report.

ThisThis is the site that got me thinking.  //www.vleds.com/

The tech has come a long way in recent years, and I was wondering if anyone had tried a newer style, inexpensive (at least compared to the $120 board conversion) bulb.

I bought 1157s for turn indicators front and back as well as the other one (Number 11xx0

Mixed results.  There are some good LED bulbs but they are expensive.   One of the bulbs that I found to be at least as good (not all that much better) were identified as "Super Bright"

Perhaps some brave soul could contact a couple of these vendors and let them know that there are a lot of Mini owners interested in brighter lights than the standard bulbs and should they make them a bit more affordable, they could see a lot of sales from us all.

If you're serious about the third brake light, I bought my Hella one from here: //www.danielsternlighting.com/products/products.html

The site also has some interesting tech articles about aiming headlights, adding relays, etc, worth checking out.

I have direct replacements LEDs in my 1967 Riley Elf. they are definitely brighter than stock 1157 1156 bulbs.

If  there is a dome light LED replacement then I'd like to change that bulb too.

We purchased our bulbs from Princess Auto in Canada.

Thank you for this thread.  Also debating whether to add a third brake light as well, though I'd rather not.

Anybody have a link to the LED boards?  I can't seem to locate them.

Thanks

2nd that.  LED boards for MK1 make a difference, brighter!

I tried the 1157 39 LED bulb on my MK5 with a much bigger lens than the MK1 and I don't think they weren't as bright as the regular bulbs.I plan to research more on the tail light bulbs, I couldn't find the lumen output on the ones I bought but they have 1157 LEDs with 550 lumen output it would just be a question if they fit the housing. I think the advantage for these cars is worth the investment they barely draw any power.

I have the wedge style 921 in my guage lights and prefer the brightness and color over the barely lit stock bulbs. I have the festoon style in my license plate lights which are the same style as your interior light (I think) and they're much brighter than stock because of their color range, still considered white but like the daylight house bulbs instead of soft white.

I used superbrightleds as my source.

I've seen some interesting LED lights on the market.  Is anyone running a MK1/2 with them, and I what are the thoughts of any folks who are?  Are they bright enough to make the puny tail light visible to other drivers?

Anyone running their dome light by LED?
