No one has mentioned that the most important thing is to get the right ratio speedo. You need to know what final drive your Mini has.

The other open is to send your Speedo out to get refitted or change the face for a MPH Speedo. What is the part number of your speedo?

It is on the speedo face.

Keep in mind that if you choose a Magnolia face MPH scale face transfer for your KPH speedometer, the odometer is still reading in killometers.  Not a big deal, just a discrepancy.

Thanks for the info guys.  I've only had my Mini since mid July and I'm quite used to doing the conversion.  My dash board has some cracks in it so I'm planning on replacing it.  I figured I have two options, 1) Get the alloy faced one and black gauges or 2) Get the wood dash and the retro looking magnolia gauges.  I'll check out the new faces, but I'm going to need some new gauges because I plan on getting the dash with the extra holes.  But in the mean time, while I'm saving up for those, I like the idea of the sticker kit.

absolutely right, Dan!

In fact, that is how I got around for about a year in college when my speedo and tach both didn't work ("follow the flow of traffic"), and I think it taught valuable lessons on being observant, and of being situationally aware while driving. I was thinking that very thing, as I was speeding away from the customs booth in Windsor, with no traffic at all, anywhere around me, while I was trying to remember how to multiply by 1.62 in my head, as, just then, the blue lights came on in my rearview mirror!

If you are coming up to Canada, The most common speeds posted are, in kph, 40, 50 (city streets, residential areas), 60, 70 (collector roads), 80 (regional roads, secondary highways), 100 on most 4-lane highways and 110 on some of the intercity divided highways (similar to Interstates).

The safest way to drive (ticketless that is) is to not go faster than the rest of traffic. If you're out on the open highway, play it safe and keep your speed down. If you want to push it, wait for someone else to go fast, then follow about a half mile behind - they will light up the lights first.

I like keeping my car largely original so I left its KPH speedometer in place.  For a while I put tiny tape dots on the glass of the speedometer to mark 10 MPH increments.

Later I decided to tinker after reading about adapting Sigma (brand) bicycle computers for use in cars.  I mounted one on the dash with the pickup magnet attached to one of the yoke type u-joints.  Its easily programmable, highly accurate, and removable.  The downside is it runs on 3V coin type batteries and it has no external illumination for night driving.

My moke has a MPH speedo but I live in Canada. At first it was weird but i got use pretty quick to convert the speeds. Insead of multiplying by 1.62, 1.5 and apprtoximate to the closest multiple of 5. is much easier and consiedring the accuracy of any Mini speedo, it's close enough.

Memorize the key speeds.

MPH - KM/h

10 - 15
20 - 30
30 - 50*
40 - 65
50 = 80
60 - 100*
70 - 115
80 - 130

* This values are raised a bit to correct for the error factor that is produced by multiplying to 1.5.

yep, that's exactly what I did:

My speedo didn't work, so I calculated the RPM / MPH and made a label for my dash. When I crossed the border into Ontario I used the RPM to convert to MPH, and then did the mental math to convert that to KPH, and in the meantime, OPP clocked me as speeding and pulled me over and presented me with a speeding ticket, about 1 1/2 minutes into Canada.

Figure it out...make yourself a reminder of the speed in miles and you'll get used to it.

kph x .62 =  your mph     100 k = 62 m

easy to buy new faces from the uk , i have swapped a couple sets before, takes a bit of skill and patience to remove the speedo needle without damage. here is one example

Depending on your gauges you can get sticker kits in MPH and KPH with a good selection of colours.

Has anyone replaced their KPH speedo with a MPH speedo?  Is there anything special that needs to be done?  I wouldn't think so, but I figured I'd ask.

Also, I'm thinking of getting new gauges.  I'd like to get some retro ones with the magnolia face.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
