Thank you everyone for your help.  I greatly appreciate it.  I read it all, the person went through a lot just to get his Classic Mini to be registered.  That looks like a huge headache.  I wonder if there are others that went through the whole process and failed through it too.

The SAXX- Chassis Number/VIN is a proper one as built in England for 998cc cars from mid-1980s to the end of 998s; including, 1989. That number would confirm all the information as discussed. It's too new for California as is.

Both the vin numbers in this case do not change anything, it is too new for CA.

Read Bikewiz's thread that he linked above this is one option albeit expensive to getting it legally registered in CA.

Your other option is to register it in another State if you own property or have family or friends there that you can do this with.

I found another VIN number that’s associated with that car that’s out of state.

SAXXL2S1N20384667

Would it still work or be worth it to get it to CA?

Yes the 99x vins were/are crudely stamped into the boot floor next to the battery. I have only seen it done on some 998cc Mini's up until around 1991 or so. I had heard that this was only done on dealer imports and not on individual imports so that maybe why some are stamped and others use the factory vin they came with.
The funny thing is the original SAXX vin plate is usually left in place on the drivers side inner wing or next to the battery or in the boot with the matching stamped factory scuttle vin also in place.

chuck.. that 10 digit vin number was a Japanese assigned vin number. NOT one from Longbridge.. Malsal.. can confirm this.. later bc ps. yes the 1989 classic mini can be done to meet CARB standards.. but I am sure it will cost at least $5k.. if NOT double this figure..

Read this https://www.minimania.com/msgThread/121752/1/1/1991_Rover_Mini_-_CA_Registration_Help

It can be done, for a price.

Cheaper and easier to find one "in state"

Listen to Werewolf's advice and find an earlier car.  It will be a lot easier to deal with.

Also... this may sound like anal semantics but....  MINI (all caps) is the preferred spelling of the "new" BMW MINI.  The classic car is a Mini (capital "M" only).  The difference may seem insignificant but using the correct version will get the right eyes on your question quicker.

Yes Bill. 17 digit vin numbers came onto effect in 1980 along with the second vin numbers.

"I have never bought a vehicle from outside the State of CA before".

I would keep it that way especially with a classic Mini. You did not state what year it is but depending on who you talk to anything newer than 1975 or 1968 is a lot of grief and almost impossible to get registered unless you are prepared to spend around $5k plus getting the Mini compliant.

I would look for one for sale already registered correctly in California already.

I'm looking to purchase a Classic MINI from VA and it has a 10 digit VIN, but I want to ship it to California.  I want to know the procedures on when I purchase the vehicle and what I have to do once I get the vehicle.  I've never bought a vehicle from outside the state of CA before, so I want to know the whole process of how to go about it.  Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Tommy
