Mike E. I am interested in an 850 or two. I plan on keeping one on the road for as long as I am around. I will contact you the next time I come up to K-town.

I have rebuilt several 850 s over the years a couple recently. If a early wet tail crank 850 parts are going to be hard to come by. Another thing I noticed is they cost just as much to build a any other mini engine. Locating NOS pistons is about the only option. The popular approach has been to wring to most out of one. I'm currently building a 1400, a 1310 and a pair of 1015 s. The 1015 s are .060 over bore 998 s built to a high std.

The important thing is to build a tranny to match your driving style. Early cars were three synchro and having a four synchro makes a more pleasant result. I have been converting 22 G 1128 AA trannys with the remote sandwich plate to magic wand using the old 850 cover.

I had been buying AA autos stripping for crank, rods Hardy Spicer drive parts. I also keep the heads which are smog heads so they would be my last choice for a head.

Shoot me an email if you want to talk about engine options. Steve (CTR)

 There are options abounding!

850 on a Magic wand box = To be pulled (running, great)

998 - running when pulled from a car that got a 1275 swap

998 -Fully dressed with trans = Unknown actual condition.  have as a core. (canadian setup) Smog pump etc.

If anyone else is interested in these lumps == Willing to free up some space.

It’s been soaking for over a month with mystery oil, Ive had multiple old cars with stuck engines in the past and it’s always done the trick. Soaked this one, tried turning it from the crank and flywheel end simultaneously even let it heat all day with a hot plate with no avail.  There’s obviously something broken or stuck in the bottom end that it shows no exterior signs of. The crank does move 1/8” or so but that’s it. Even took the time to free all the valves first before touching the crank, valves all move freely. Most stuck engine I’ve experienced, I’d rather find a good replacement before digging into this one.

I have only driven two 850s.  They were OK for around town but I would be scared to take one on a major road.

That said, if your car still has its original "number's matching" engine, the car may be worth more if you can fix the 850.  If you get a Heritage Certificate that will indicate the original engine number installed in the car.  Another recent thread has the information on how to get the certificate.

BTW, I am in Durham.  Where in western NC are you?

Don't know if it will make your 850 useable, but if it is stuck, here's a sure fire way of unsticking it. Pull all the spark plugs and fill each cylinder with apple cider vinegar. The brownish vinegar. Put the plugs back in and let it sit for at least a week. After a week or so, pull the plugs and try turning it over with a socket and powerhandle. The vinegar will eat away at the rust and it should turn freely.

Western NC ! Awesome!   Almost a local, I'm in Charlotte.
Reach out! Email in my profile.

I have a 850 (currently running, that im planning on pulling)   and a 998 Optional engine that may be of interest and within a few hours that would also be a Easy Manual to Manual swap engines.

Ok good deal. Thanks for the info guys. That’s what I was looking to find out. I had seen where others were talking about the auto/manual block differences but just wanted to double check. I’m located in western North Carolina. The day I brought the car home a guy stopped by to chat about it and said he possibly has a 998 engine he’d sell so I’ll dig into that next. Thanks again for the replies.

sometimes posting your location will allow those local to you to perhaps offer suggestions or even drivetrains while avoiding comments from the peanut gallery.

That said, your 1960 is likely a magic wand gearbox and an early one at that. That would mean the casting is different from later boxes so it will not take the longer throw crank of a 1275 engine. It's POSSIBLE to modify an early 3syncro case for a 1275, but there's no guarantees your particular case will accept the modifications (grinding).

However, you CAN fit a 998 onto your 3 syncro gearbox.

Your easiest thing to do is find a complete engine and manual transmission with shift linkage and be willing to cut a hole in your exhaust tunnel to poke the shifter up through. Or fit a running 998 onto your existing gearbox.

Quick answer = NO. Not easy or cheap

1275 Auto Blocks are quite different than Manual Blocks.  Oil Pump _ Pickup { filter flow are all different }
They CAN be modded but takes proper machine work and modifications = more complications to get it done right.

New to the classic mini world and recently acquired a 1960 Mini 850/4 speed manual left hand drive. The original 850cc engine is quite stuck and in rough shape after a month or so of trying all the tricks to get it spinning, I'm throwing in the towel on that engine. The car is a manual 4 speed and I'm looking to just get it on the road and not make a race car so no Vtec swaps or anything crazy like that needed. Locally I have found an Austin America with a 1275cc/automatic that looks in good shape. My question is will that 1275 bolt up to my original 4 speed gearbox or what modifications would be needed? Id like to keep the car a manual. I'm looking for the easiest most cost effective swap, not trying to make a hot rod, that engine just is available locally so most appealing to me. If it will not fit my stock gearbox would that same 1275/auto engine bolt up to a Austin American 4 speed manual? Then drop into the Mini? Any info would be greatly appreciated, after lots of searching I wasn't able to find a similar situation.
