For ball bearings, grease seal lip towards the bearing, closed side of the seal towards the radius arm. I do the same for tapered bearings.

General wisdom says that grease seal should be positioned to keep the grease inside the hub. BUT if you assembled your boat trailer the same way, and backed into the water, it is possible to let water into the hub, and it would not be able to escape. Also on some applications, the seal is installed "backwards", for instance on a automactily greased "machine". To reduce the possibility of pushing the seal out of place. The excess grease pressure leaks by the seal, but the seal is intact. It is also possible to buy double lip seals, 1 lip keeps grease in, 1 lip keeps dirt/water out.

I was driving a rented sting ray, because my barracuda was in the shop, when it suddenly overheated, I pulled in a shell station. The mechanic said I had blown a seal. I said leave my personal life out of it and fix the damn car.

This is not specific to the mini, but usually grease seals without a flange face go flush to the casting. You can also get some idea of where the seal should be located if you look at the shaft, it will have a shiny ring where the seal rides on it.

I have searched this forum as well as the Mk1-forum and I have seen multiple answers to this question.
what is the proper position for the rear hub grease seal?
- will original ball bearings
- with newer tapered bearings
