I have noticed coolant puddling on the left side of the transmission and I see it dripping from the thermostat housing to the crossover tube where they connect. I am going to try to tackle this myself. My question is. Are factory parts better then aftermarket or where can I purchase good quality parts? Not to sure on the cheap eBay parts. (Thermo housing and coolant crossover pipe) wonder why the genuine parts failed. 39k miles on my cooper. Any advise will be well appreciated. Thank you

It sounds like you are looking at the thermostat housing and the hard pipe that connects to the water pump.
As for why it may have failed, the problem may be with a simple seal and not the part itself. Regardless of mileage, you have a 10 year old car and it would not be unusual for a rubber seal to fail.
A lot of modern engine parts are being made of a plastic type material and given the extreme conditions that they operate under, I am not surprised they will eventually fail as well....
