Well I did all of the above suggestions with no luck.  Yesterday I walked into the garage sat down and started jiggling wires and lo and behold the lights came on.  It was just a loose wire in the bundle going down the steering column.  Thanks to all for your help.

According to my Haynes, a '93 would have a relay on the low beam circuit.  There is also a resistor in the low beam control circuit from the switch to the relay. No idea why they would add complexity to a simple lighting system. (I'm guessing they might be Lucas parts.)

I  know my '94 has fusible links at the starter motor that controls the  headlights.

You say the car is a 1993 version. It may have a relay for the low beam lighting. It also likely has some wiring bullet type joins down in the front slam panel near the horn. Wire some out of the loom and are then split to go to the left and right lighting clusters. Pulling the engine might not have disturbed them but you never know. IN any case, the connectors could be corroded from age - theyare right out front where they can get road spray.

Since you seem to have power (voltage, really) at the lights (ie: high beams work) , really there are only a few things it can be:

  • -Switch
  • -wiring
  • -both low beam elements blown.

Since we tend to drive our little beasties mostly in the daytime, this MIGHT be a possibility:

Super easy to pop the connector off the back of each sealed beam (with car off) and see with your Ohmmeter if your low beam elements are both working.  Not sure right now exactly what you should be seeing, but a W.A.G. might be 10-11 Ohms (just a guess) and lower resistance on the high beam portion of the element.

  ~ 30 minutes in a Mini is more therapeutic than 3 sessions @ the shrink. ~

Tinkered with it some today again.  I found an electrical diagram in my shop manual that I could compare to the actual car.  I checked the fuse panel and they were ok then found two inline fuses, also good.  When I pulled both headlamps out, the wires going to them were brown whereas the diagram calls them blue/red and blue/white.  Now the manual has numerous electrical schematics depending on the year/make and accessories, like carbs and alternators, so I'll look again to make sure I've got the right one.

Now the thing that worries me.  Three months ago I had the engine pulled and replaced the final drive, from 3.4 to 3.1.  Well that means there is a possibility that a wire going to the low beam side could have been disturbed, and I have only driven in the dark last week.  I'm leaning in that direction.  Hope not, so I'll save it for tomorrow.

It's a 93.  The switch checks out with my ohm meter.  Power coming in ok.  I think it's the switch on the steering column but I can't follow the source of power.  The power is there when I turn on the switch and I can switch to high beams or flash the high beams but no low beams.  Well this will give me something to do this afternoon.

What year is your mini? Late models have a fusible link. It's not the push/pull switch.

Checked the switch, with my ohm meter and it seems ok.  Then next is the high/low beam switch.  I can't find anything goofy with it but it doesn't make any sense as I test it, I did take the cover off so I can see the contacts.  I think it maybe in that switch but have to remove the steering wheel to get it off and I need one more tool to put the steering off.  Gave up today will mess with it some more tomorrow.

Was able to run into town yesterday in my Mini.  Came home just after sunset and into the garage noticed not headlights.  His beams ok but not low beams.  I had this same issue years ago and found something loose in the high/low beam switch.  This time it doesn't appear to be there.  So pouring down rain today in Oregon so I guess I spend Christmas day in the garage.

Anyone have a similar experience??
