Just a quick update, had the car diagnosed and it turns out to be the CAS module that isn't communicating. So as I type the car is going into the garage to have a new one fitted. Cheers

It may not be the problem in your case, but I saw a video of a mechanic trying to solve an intermittent start issue. It turned out the car owner had added a cute decorative cover over the trim around the key slot which prevented full insertion of the key.
In your case, maybe the trim is loose or distorted or the guts behind it are not secure.
You might also try your key alone - off your key ring - in case another key or fob is causing radio (rfid) interference.

It is not the fob that is the problem, it is the SLOT. Key fob is fine. ??

The keys have RFID that are matched to the vin number of the car. It you are able to start the car, even briefly, then this information must be intact in your key fob. Does your MINI have the comfort option that comes with the 'battery replaceable' key fob? Or did you have to crack open the key fob to replace the battery? If the latter, I wonder if something was damaged in the process?
You may need to take the key and car to a MINI dealer to have the key tested, assuming the key is the original key that came with the car.

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could be of assistance as I am in a pickle. The trouble is in the shape of a 2007 Mini Cooper S r56, whose key reader is playing up. 6 months ago i replaced the key battery, then 1 month ago I saw that the "no key present" light kept randomly appearing on the warning screen. If I Push down on the key fob The car will start but as soon as released pressure the no key present sign reappears. I ordered and tried to replace the Reader unit but thought perhaps I had bought a dud, so purchased a second unit, and surprise surprise that didn't work either. still have the original unit in and after lots of fiddling and pushing down can just about manage to get the car started.
Have I missed a trick? are these not just plug and play replacements or does some code or wizardry need to be performed.?
