Spongy brakes aren't down to the servo - I've had both remote and built-in systems and not had a spongy feel.
I'd be tempted to suggest a complete fluid change and thorough bleeding session along with ensuring the rear drums are adjusted properly as they can inadvertently take up a huge amount of pedal travel.

Has anyone successfully removed the brake booster, either leaving the stock master cylinder, or putting on a new one?
I hear this delete will eliminate the spongy brake feel.
