just got the brake shoes on.  once i figured that it is best to get the top shoe on with springs attached and the bottom shoe hanging by one spring, then it was just a matter of jiggling for a minute to get the final spring hook into its slot.  next job - bleed the brakes.  thnx for all the advice everyone

Mini Magazine September 2015 had an excellent tech article on doing this - should be available online.

To add a tip to what Ian says, it can be tricky to get the long springs hooked in with the brake shoes in place.  My solution was to assemble the springs to the shoes and then work the "loop" of parts past the drive flange and around the hub. Then you position one shoe and pull on the other one to extend the springs and slip the shoe into place. Or put one shoe in place with the springs, hook the springs to the second shoe and pull it into place.

.

If you look at the shoes you will see there is an area of the backing plate that is not covered by the pad material. This is short at one end and longer at the other.

Check which way the drum turns as the car goes forward.... basically the top goes forward and the bottom goes back.

Now line up the shoes so that the long bit of the backing plate faces the other way. Any point on the drum will move over the long bit first then the pad then the short bit.

I don’t have front drums but I seem to remember that the shoes sit at the top and bottom of the hub. So the long (uncovered) bit of the top shoe goes to the back and the long bit goes to the front at the bottom.

Install the offset spring so the centre bit doesn’t rub on the hub. If you put it on the wrong way round it will rub.....

I have never had a car that had the cylinder to shoe springs. Someone probably has a good reason they should be fitted but in 50 odd years I’ve not ever seen one....

Cheers, Ian

hello all
can someone please post a picture of the correct orientation (including wheel direction of rotation) for installation of front brake shoes for a twin leading shoe model.

my haynes manual is confusing on this matter.

and in addition can someone post a picture showing the orientation of the shoe tensioning springs (the later ones with a single "curly" bit).

and also
i seem to be missing the small springs that attach between the brake cylinder and the brake shoe. can someone advise on the purpose of this spring??

i notice that the minmania upgrade kit does not include these springs.  are they considered unnecessary?
