I might suggest a coat hanger wire with a small hook. go though fill opening gentle hook the float arm and see if it has sunk or the unit has failed due to wear. If you order a new sender don't forget a new gasket. Steve (CTR)

The sender unit is a basically a float on a wire arm that goes up & down with the fuel level; the floats can sometimes spilt and sink to the bottom of the tank, and this is likely to be the case here.

As Ian says, dip the tank to make sure the fuel level is below the sender hole and pull the sender out.  You'll quickly know if the float has failed because it will be full of fuel (or missing).

Are later senders simple rheostats like earlier models???

Make sure tank is nearly empty, remove sender and test resistance across terminals as you waggle the float....

Maybe check the voltage stabiliser is attached/working before tampering with tank..

Cheers, Ian

My fuel gauge isn't registering fuel even though there is all kinds of gas in the tank.  The gauge itself is good as when I touched the two wires going to the sending unit the gauge needle moves to full.  Other than the sending unit does anyone have any ideas?  It is an 96 SPI

Thanks
