So owners manual (PDF is on-line) says that symbol means cruise control has failed- have system checked. Since I don't even have roll down windows let alone cruise, I am afraid I can't be of anymore help.

I was hoping that someone here had some idea what that error light indicates. That's kind of the point of a forum. It's a place where people can ask questions and expect better answers than "take it to the dealer". BTW, the nearest Mini dealer is almost 100 miles away from me, so the tow cost would be exorbitant. I'm not buying a Mini specific code reader.

Without sounding glib, buying a better reader or taking it to the Dealer would be my first thought.

Yesterday, my wife's 2007 R56 base model Mini started going into limp mode. Right before it does so, I get the attached error light. My cheap code reader doesn't show any codes on the Mini. Any ideas? TIA
