Replacement Suggestions and Torque
Spark plug technology has come a long ways and the modern plugs last a lot longer than in the past. However, they DO wear down and can impact your engine's efficiency.
The factory might recommend a 100,000 mile interval for replacements but most MINI owners replace them much sooner.
Since a worn spark plug can affect your fuel efficiency, we recommend you inspect them regularly and replace when they start to show signs of wear.
ALWAYS torque the spark plugs to the proper torque setting:
- 27 Nm or 20 ft-lb for Gen 1 MINIs (R50 R52 R53)
Upgrade - Spark Plugs, Coils and Wires

Recommended Ignition Coil Upgrades
Recommended Spark Plug Wire Upgrades

- OEM Spark Plug Wires – NME7676-P
- Better Spark Plug Wires - NME3001-P
Sockets
All current MINI models have spark plugs located at the bottom of a deep well - this requires special 'extended' spark plug sockets. On the R50, R52 and R53 models, we recommend using a six point 5/8" deep well spark plug socket to reach the deep set spark plugs on your MINI. (This socket has a 3/8" drive, is 5" long, and equipped with the expected rubber insert.)
We also recommend the use of 'locking extensions' so the socket does not get stuck on the plugs.
