Aaron,

we changed the LeMon over from RHD to LHD on the weekend, I grabbed the "best" rack from the pile (going with the assumption that they were all MK2 racks) not so...

While the travel may be the same, the rack was narrower, and the tie rod ends were too short... We dug through the pile til we found a good 2.7 turn rack and all is good!

Ed, Quick ratio racks refer to the fact that the wheel turns just 2.1 turns lock to lock. The standard rack turns 2.7 but the travel is the real key here. i got a quick ratio rack and decided to get down to the nitty gritty on what was going on with the steering geometry and set one up in the race car and i could not see a difference in the turning geometry, thinking i could not see the difference in my crude measuring methods. turns out i had the rack out shortly afterwards. I set it on the bench and measured the travel. Turning the steering wheel one turn the rack traveled 1.625 inches at the track rod end. Setting up the std mk2 rack i measured the same thing 1.625. So what is going on here if they are the same? People keep saying that the handling has changed after the rack is installed. The difference seems to be what steering arms you have there are four that i have come across. Mk1 and 2 standard arms and mk1 and 2 cooper s arms. the cooper s arms are beefier than the regular arms. The angle on the mk 1 arms on both the regular and the s arms are the same. and the angle on the mk 2 arms are the same. This angle controls the amount of ackerman angle in the front wheels. This is the extra turn in the front wheels ever notice the inside wheel turns more than the outside wheel? Anyway It seems to be common knowledge among the racers in england that the mk2 rack with the mk2 arms are the only way to go. If you get the arms mixed up you will get weird handling at speed. And the same goes for mk 1 arms. So installing a quick ratio rack will just get you a larger turning circle and may or may not (depending if you have mk 1 or 2 arms) make your handling worse. Aaron

The quicker the ratio the more effort on the part of the driver to use it.

I used one for autocrossing where it had a purpose. I can't see any reason to run one on the street.

I am getting ready to purchase a new steering rack, does anyone have any experience with the quick ratio racks?
