Well we found the black wire was infact broken under the sheath (insulation)-  repaired it for now, runs as good as ever- Now looking for a new 59D4 electronic dizzy locally as l need this car 100% before l make the 500 mile run to Magog, Que-

Zip, must of had another senior moment (  read brain fart) , can't recall you mentioning that but entirely possible, just never did that for me-Looks like a new dizzy is around $144.00-

Yep, the black wire connecting the plate screwed to the distributor body and the petronix ignitor plate was quite frayed, perhaps this was the proximate cause for the misfire.

I have a three year old Lucas coil, is the flame thrower coil much of a real improvement over stock?

Al,
I mentioned the same symptoms when I drove it back from Bronte last year. Only did it a couple of times and picked right up again... Sounds like it got worse.

Tell me about it-

On Saturday at Mosport driving the track in my BRG mini 1380 Swiftune, my engine started breaking down (stalling out under load) @ 4000 rpm-Down shift to 3rd and it would restart-Got my A$$ off the track pdq-

Next day decided to make the 25 mile trip to Oshawa for a free lunch at the BMW/BINI dealer, yep same thing, so , l had to baby it there-Limped home with the same problem- Lots of experts at the Meet, l was so pi$$ed l would have bought a new petronix flame thrower  coil but of course none available up there-Now it looks like it could be a "chaffed" wire in the dizzy-Will get a look at it and either try and repair it or buy a new  petronix dizzy-

What a bummer

Ok, as an update, I dismantled and cleaned the distributor, and set the timing about two degrees short of factory specs and all seems to be running right now. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I've had that happen on accelerations or when pulling hills as well.  I checked everything as well, but evenutally realized it was one fouled plug causing a misfire under pressure.

Possibly a bad coil.  I had what I thought was a Lucas (gold coloured body) coil... turned out to be a Chinese knock off.. piece of crap.. Replaced with a Petronix Flame thower.. Happy.. Happy.

Replace the plug wires.

Hello All,

I have a '91 rover mini, 998 cc. I'm currently experiencing a misfire when I accelerate or going uphill. This does not typically occur in neutral. Below is everything I have checked

Cleaned carb, checked piston drop Checked fuel lines, all in good condition with no leaks Set valve clearances Replaced distributor cap and rotor Topped off dashpot oil

I do see some smoke on startup and plugs 3 and 4 were blackish when I gaped them.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
