I have done two headliners and although a pia with time and patience it can be done. The ones i did were both on MK 111 up cars with all the glass out and plenty of clips to hold it in place while the glue sets (i used the larger paper binder clips from an office supply store). It is best when you have two people doing the job to get all the creases and imperfections out otherwise yo uare constantly running around the car plus a hair dryer or heat gun on low is useful for the corners. Both times the soundproofing had fallen down from the roof section and i replaced it with dynamat/fatmat. Just take your time and keep your hands clean or wear latex gloves.

I agree with you Steve on the profile and it would be nice to have to fill in your location to create a profile as it seems to be left out and ends up being asked so many times on the board, maybe with the new site coming the guys will look into that.

If in doubt, flat out. Colin Mc Rae MBE 1968-2007.

It would be a big help if the profile included a place to list ones mini type and year. The earlier cars had a headliner that came out in two parts attached to a pair of frames. The MK3 and up ( I think ) is mounted on rods and is glued into the car. The rods are cheap thin metal with plastic clips at the ends. There are several different shapes and they are location sensitive. The problem my guy had was the old rods ends were brittle and broke as soon as the liner was tightened. Also the Newton kit seams did not line up correctly with the rod placement. The new rod set was subject to the ends breaking just as he got the thing as tight as he wanted. I also like to learn and do things myself. I have also learned some things are best left to those who already know. Good luck, I have a buddy who did his own and was very pleased. I think having to remove all the glass is the hard part.

Nick, buying one is the easy way out I want to do it myself, stubbornness maybe, or I just enjoy figuring out stuff that's new.

Which headliner design are you working with? I bought a set of rods and material kit for my interior guy and he ask that I never do that again. He was not satisfied with either and made his own.

I have 2 new/ old ones (never installed but shop soiled) that I use for patterns. When looking at fabric choices be sure to pick a material that is ment for headliners. Unless you absolutely need a custom color/ fabric I would suggest buying one off the shelf.

im also very interested in a template and a how-to on install/removal. I've been meaning to tear the old one down to put up sound insulation material, but its one of the few things I'm  just not ready to dive in and start hacking away at. It looks like it may require a certain finess that I'm just not ready to give. haha

Has anyone sewn up a new headliner on their own? Or is there a Pattern or size/ specs of each panel? I would chop the old one up and go off of it, but if I royally mess it up I don't want to be stuck sans headliner. Looked in the DIY section to no avail.

Thanks,

Josh
