Hi Al,

The Ad is from the Chilean Mini, saying that no matter where you look at it, is a sound investment.

I guess is a good statement on how strong these GRP bodies can be, and of course, ther's no rust.

Scott, you should be able to put regular subframes on it... I don't think they made special subframes for it.

I have no idea how much the Chilean body wheights, but with the Mini Cord made in Venezuela, the body was actually heavier than the steel body. They are however substantially stronger and stiffer.

Many panels in the Cord were quite tick, the hood and trunk probably wheighted twice as much as the steel ones... surelly they felt that way when you opened them. The Mini Cord Official weigth for a basic 998 was 690 Kg.

The Chilean and Mini Cord bodies are completely different developments and they share no common components, and I have never seen one Chilean Mini in person. But the idea of never dealing with rust is quite tempting, even if it's at a wheight premium.

So Miguel,

What you are saying is that we just couldn't get the shell, put our dry subframes in it and have a light weight Mini???

miguel-

Thanks for chiming in, always good to hear fron an expert in these matters-

I can't read the details in the brochure of the guy in the cream slacks standing on the  belly of a mini, is he showing us the firm structure of the body or looking for rust in all the wrong places

I'm here!

Chilean Minis were made by BL to supply the local Market. They could not import cars, only assembly and manufacture locally. At first they assemblied british CKD kits starting in 1964 to 1968 but in order to meet with tighter local content laws, the only way they could do it was by producing the bodies in Chile.

Since the production was relatively small to justify the tolling and equipment needed to produce steel bodies, they decided to venture with the GRP bodyshells.

The bodies were designed by Peel industries in the Isle of Man, and they made a few running prototypes.

The fiberglass Minis went into production in 1969 and it was kept in production until 1974 when the plant closed down with BL restructuration.

They also produced the Austin 1100 with GRP body. I think.

It's a very nice piece, and rare, worthy of being restored. Too bad is not complete as they are parts unique to the chilean Mini, like the stop lights.

I don't think this is a Mini Cord shell.  Mini Cords had gutters and seams...and internal door hinges.  Look at the data plate: British Leyland Automotores de Chile SA would indicate a car from 1968-1969 built under the control of BL.  Notice too the Mk1 features of the body: tail light appetures, grill opening, hydro suspension...

A very cool bit!

Just what I need to reshell my rusty Cooper S!!

Agh... I can trade you a 1960 Austin mk1 shell 128xx vin Getting rid of that shell would be the only way a new one could come in. That is an awesome price btw.

There both made of fiberglass. There is some metal tubing inside the floor, but on the  exterior portion.

Were all the Minis made in Chile fiberglass?

An added bonus for those that don't like seams - it's already de-seamed by default!

I have a fiberglass Chile mini for sale. I would like to know more about its history before I put it in the cars for sale section. It was setup with a hydrolastic suspension, external door hinges. I also have an extra set of doors with motorized windows. Thanks
