I've slotted the mine for the two hard ones also. Just need to slacken them off to remove the cover.....saves trying to piss around starting the thread and threading all the way.

If I don't leave them out, I shorten them (or put shorter ones in).

Thanks everyone, I like the idea of slotting the holes on the more tricky ones.

I leave out the one @ 8-o'clock against the subframe.
I keep the 2 bottom ones, but use a short 1/2" ring/OE spanner, with the ring end heated & bent @ 45°. Works fine for me...
I don't leave any out, but I do have the custom 1/2' spanner in the drawer... If you keep the threads clean on assembly and keep the engine clean, once you have cracked the bolts, they should spin out ok. it's when they have been there since the 60's that they tent to fight you.

The flex-head ratchet spanners make it a lot easier than in times long gone, but they are still a PITA IMO. Personally, I slot the holes in the cover so they need only be slackened off, then the cover can be lifted off. Just make sure you slot them both pointing in the same direction though.
It's been fun, but this place is done. I have no hatred, and appreciate the good times. But this place now belongs to Tony and his pink mini.

Check out your car.... the bolts you reckon you couldn't reach with a spanner?? they're the ones to leave out...
Cheers, Ian

Over the years, I've seen many references to leaving two bolts out of the clutch 'wok' to aid future removal. I've seen some people say to leave the back two out, and others say leave the bottom two out.
What's the current philosophy on this....a idea, or misguided? If it's a good idea, which are the two that should be left out?
Thanks
