I have a set of 5X10 D1 Dunlops which I wore out three sets of 145 X10 tires on. My car is a 85 1000 E with Cooper S 7.5s and Super fins rear. I do not run flares and they are fine. My new 1360 Cooper S engine is to much for 145s 10 or 12s. I'm going to 4.5 with 165 X 10. Still no flares. Steve (CTR)

I would alo check whether the chosen rims (and tyres) clear the inner arch/shocks at the rear. If not, then you can add S type spaced drums to remedy that sitiuation - but then there's risk that the rubber will poke out past the guards...
Cheers, Ian

Thanks everyone for the info. I like how the tires look on cup cake's woody. I'm not too much into flares unless that's how I got the car. I just want to make sure I wasn't pushing the limits with the tires and rims, just want to be safe also. John, I bought the 63 Austin Cooper at the Queens English car show last year for 6k. It had a 1275 Cooper S thin flange motor with a metro head. The engine was fine, 150 psi across, but the gear box was making a clunky noise. Swapped it out with Kenny on a rebuilt 988 Cooper engine. The tail light had been cut out and mk2 tail lights were strapped on. I had the paint shop weld on mk1 tail panels and gave the mini a fresh coat of paint. The mini was bought from a major Fiat collector who was downsizing his collection. He still has his 65 Cooper S.

I have 10x5 Minilites with worn 008s and have been hoping to trade with somebody who has 10x6 Minilites or replicas.

I'm I going to have any problems with installing 145/10 tires on a 5x10 Dunlop's. I'm putting them on a 63 Austin Cooper, no flares. 7" disc brakes. I'm just not sure if the largest width tire you can use is up 4.5" or 5", or do i need to go up to 165/10. Thanks
George
George you should be fine with the 7.0 disk's on the front since they run the same track as a drum brake car. The tires may look a little "skinny" but not out of line. I doubt they will stick out and require arches.
Will the Cooper be running a 997/998 lump? If you are running a larger engine the greater traction of the Yokohama's might come in handy when accellerating and braking. When I had the Kumho 145/10's on my 1275 powered Mini it slid all over the place under power (kinda like drifing a Mini, fun stuff!).
I have a set of Dunlop D1's with A008's you are welcome to test fit to get a better idea if you like?

Without flares the tires will be outside the body and the car will get dirty.
165 are always better handling than 145.
A008 are terrible in the rain, something you don't ge t a lot of.
If going up in width the 038R are nicer tires but don't last as long.
Falken 165/70/10 last a lot longer and have great traction in the rain...

145's work fine with 5" or 4.5 " wheels. Any wider you have to use 165

With the offset of Dunlops and disc brakes, you will probably want flares... If the tire is stretched you will have to add more air to keep the center from collapsing, it won't handle very well... This pic is with discs, Dunlops 5X10, and 165 008's, a great combination (3/4" spacers on the rear as well).
