Mine's a 1982 MK IV from the UK and it has fender mirrors which I'm pretty sure are from the factory since everything else was stock when I bought it.  The mirrors definitely look cool, but as Rosebud says, not so useful.

Ordinary black grommets will fill the holes in the wings satisfactorily. I think the wing mounted mirrors were simply a Japanese attempt to make the mini even more "retro" as these mirrors were very common on Japanese cars of the 70's and 80"s.

I like your choice of white for the mirrors, I used black and think the white ones look best.

Here's my car ... remember I am swapping the chrome hood wings with white side mirrors. I bought the white side mirrows thinking I will not like the wings, but that it to be determined. I was thinking I would need something to fill the holes in the front side panel.

Speaking of side mirrors, anyone knows where I can get this type of side mirror mount? Found this photo from a website cant remember where. He owns a mk1 racer that lives up north California. Dont know him personally so I hope he wont mind me posting this photo of his mirror. Before I try fabricating one maybe I can just buy one.

Depending on the look you're after as well, these streetrod "Peep" mirrors are another option. The 3" round looks really custom, and though small, properly mounted on the on the drivers side seam, it can provide a 'sweet spot' to see who's coming up on you. There are many options and styles and accessories for different applications. Check some of them them out here.  //www.speedwaymotors.com/3-Inch-Peep-Mirror,7548.html               Mini Estate

I'd fill those holes with a couple of these.

Looking at some of those old films, it does seem that all the vans and pick-ups had wing mirrors.  They seem much further forward than this example though.

Ha! let me google that for you, I forgot about that.

Anyway guess I should have been more specific I also did a google search and it returned a plethora of clamp on mirrors very few that clamp on the seam.

However it seemed that one type in particular was preferred at least by malsal and captin61 that clamps on the seam. If there is one brand type that is considered the better choice I would like to know before ordering some. Or even if not seam clamped any feedback on clamp on mirrors would be useful as I don't really care to drill holes in the car. Also don't want a set like I once put on a 50 chevy that were complete P.O.S. that could not be kept tight. Got a better set later that someone at a show told me about and they were great.

A lot of the mini ones apper to clamp the glass? that seems like stupic idea or maybe I'm stupic and don't understand.

Car is a Jan 1960 keeping the slider windows.

Thank you Jeff

Not all wing mirrors on early Minis were dealer installed. The factory could supply them and they were required on Vans and Pickups destined for Norway, Switzerland and France according to the service parts lists from the period. I suspect they could be ordered on other models as well. There are British Pathe films from the factory in the 1960s that show wing mirrors installed on Vans at the late stages of the production line.

Wow, thanks for all the info everyone. I always thought it was a Japanese style thing. They do look different but I worried about the practically of adjusting them. Good to know that most have holes to put the regular side type back in.

Thanks for the help!

Malsal, I agree. Those clamp on the seam "overtaking mirrors" are the most practical...and the most useful...and you don't have to drill holes!

The wing mirrors on early Mini's were dealer installed. A lot of the early cars in days gone by had the overtaker mirror mounted on the fender / a panel seam at head height, i think they still make these.

I think you'll find its more than a "style" thing...

I was once told that part of the Japanese driver test included the requirement to do a reverse parallel park without turning your head.   Sounds strange but wing mirrors make this relatively easy ....and are pretty common on early Japanese cars.

UK ones as well.  Long w/b Minis (Travellers etc) came with wing mirrors - at least they had the mounting holes...don't know if the factory actually supplied the mirrors. You do get used to them.

Cheers, Ian
