I have a 1972 with the original service invoice. It was a separate charge to "supply and fit wing mirrors", so at least in that year it was an option. I don't know why. They are completely useless.

It's purely a styling thing. That's the way the Japanese like them. I've imported Jap cars with both convenationally mounted mirrors and the type on top of the wings. On cars with mirrors on the wings there were still holes on doors where standard mirrors had been removed.

A lot of the Jap spec cars have them but not all, most if not all have been added afterwards and have small plastic covers over the door mirror holes.

I love the classic look of wing-mounted mirrors, but IMO they're miserably impractical. I had them on my '59 MGA. It's a 2-person job to adjust them; one behind the wheel and one to move the mirror. Not only that, because of the distance between the driver and the mirror, your field of vision is miniscule. Try this; take a smallish round mirror, have someone hold it 3 or 4 feet away and see how impossibly tiny the image in the mirror is. Of course, the MGA had l-o-n-g front fenders making the effect even worse. The Mini, not so much. But still...

My Jap 1989 MINI has them. I do believe it's a legal thing over there. I've seen them on many other JDM cars. No idea why.....they definately are not as practical as the "tex" style door mirror.

And I'm only interested in the Japanese 91 models forward (MKVI and MKVII).

Yes, that's what I'm talking about. Why do some Minis gave them and others do not?

Do you mean fender or wing mirrors when talking about "hood" mirrors ?

Does anyone know why some Minis have side mirrors and others have hood mirrors?
Do the hood mirrors signify a certain model or build package? Were they factory installed or aftermarket installed?
