In the meantime ...  changing your wheel ET from 7 to 10 (interested how you know what you have at present??) will move the centreline of the new wheel an extra 3mm outwards... However, the new wheel is 12.7 (wish) mm narrower than the existing wheel ..which means the edge of the rim will move roughly 6mm inwards ... the nett result being that the outer edge will move 3mm inwards when fitted to the car.

However, the final result will depend on what tyre you use...  All 165/60x12 wheels are not the same.

The manufacturer measures their tyre when fitted to "their" standard wheel ... which is maybe different  from that used by another manufacturer.  I don't know about 12" tyres but while 165x10 Yokohamas will fit on the rear of my S, the (notionally) same size (165x10) Falkens will not.  The Falkens are about 10mm wider overall than the Yokos when fitted to a standard S rim...... and so they rub on the shock absorber...

I've had both. My car came with Ultralights with the "diamond cut" or polished lip, I replaced them with 12x5 silver painted Minilites. The Minilites are easier to keep clean, well finished, and I think look better. I run 165/60/12 Yoko A539 tires with a Wood and Picket style arch and they are well under the arch, I've tried a set of Group 2 arches and they also cover the tire.

I have found some Ultralights, color, width and size I need!

However, the ET is 10, currently I have ET 7.
I have currently 12"x6, the new ones would be 12"x5,5.

Would the slight difference in ET change how much the wheels stick out?
Over here, technical inspection is super strict, and the wheel cannot stick out past the fender at all. 0,0. Does this Matter?

Whatever kind of rims he had so much trouble with, don't buy those, they sound like they were crappy ones.

If he claimed that the tires were damaged putting them on the rims, he was probably doing it wrong. Some rims need to have the tires mounted from the back. 

I don't know about all of the different manufacturers, but I'm sure there are good and bad ones. I love my Performance Superlite wheels. I've had them on for 11 years and they still look great. 

So I am looking at getting a new set of 12x6 inch rims and a new set of tires for my 88 Cooper.

The current tires are done for, and the rims either need fixing (straightening and working out curb rash) or just outright replacing.

I went to my local Mini parts dealer, who strongly encouraged me NOT to buy new rims, and simply have the old ones redone (not at his garage mind, he doesn't offer the service, so no gain for him there), citing poor quality issues, with lacquer peeling after just a year or 2 and it being apparently very difficult to pull the wheels onto the rims without damaging the sidewall threads.


A local Mini friend agreed on the matter as well.

I was just wondering what your experiences were with aftermarket rims... Should I have them redone or look for a decent older secondhand set?
