You didn't say you were military. If you're going to be in the US on official orders, that should make all the difference. As long as you keep a Canadian residence and keep your registration up to date, there shouldn't be any question at all about resident status or importing the vehicle. You're simply driving your legally registered vehicle while visiting.

Wow... interesting read... I think I'll attempt to keep the Ontario plates and reg.  No point trying to "import" when I'm CDN Air Force and leaving 3-4 years later.

I'll have to ask Hagerty if they'll insure me in CO with Ontario papers...

Cheers all!

Would there be a problem taking it back to Canada if here for that long though? I dunno.

I do know people who have been running their Mini on UK plates and not Colorado registered for over a decade w/o any issues.

Worth taking it with you so you can take it up Pike's Peak.

Also to note: When I did my Moke, I didn't have to pay the state sales tax because the UK V5c was in my name. I did still have to pay the federal tax.

Whether you are living in a place where you have to do emissions or not, do adjust it for the altitude.

Before I start calling the DMV in Colorado... wondering if any of you have insight into this.

Short story, I have a 1980 Mini 1000, recently restored...(original engine, but not a stock config).

I am likely moving to Colorado from Canada for the next few years, and am considering taking the Mini with me to enjoy down there.

Looking for insight into some of the process in taking it with me, registering etc...  Ultimately I'll be back in Canada within 4 years.

Thanks all!

Rich
