BEDDING-IN CARBON METALLIC PADS  - C-8G8993
Carbon metallic pads will fade at high temperature if not fully bedded. Only fully bedded pads will provide fade-free high performance. For maximum efficiency, new discs are recommended.

AP recommends that the pad be bedded with the actual disc on which it is to be used. A pad can be heat conditioned on any disc, but it must be run with a coated disc to perform (the pad coats of the disc during bedding in procedure). If other pad materials are used between Carbon Metallic pads, the disc surfaces will need recoating. Railed or badly scored discs MUST be replaced with new ones. Any resin deposit should first be removed using emery cloth. Once coated, the disc should not be cleaned so long as Carbon Metallic pads are to be used. The pads should fit the caliper without being tight. Pump the pistons out to contact the pads.
AP Racing then recommends the following procedure for bedding both ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ pads:
1. Tape up ducts (50-75%).
2. Make several slow stops to ensure sufficient pad/disc contact area (80-90%) has been established.
3. Do not left-foot brake. Do not drag brakes: make several firm/hard stops from as high a speed as possible. On light braking circuits, extra stops on long straights will speed the bedding process. Continue braking from high speeds until fade occurs. Continue braking hard until pad recovers.
4. One fade is no longer apparent, cool the brakes. Do this by making one or two laps without usng them. Cooling the brakes is most important and ‘Red’ pads should be allowed to cool completely, where possible removing the pads from the caliper.
5. Check from the temperature paints that the discs have reached peak operating temperatures to be sure of full bedding. Remove tape as required.
6. There are three AP thermal paint colours: green, orange and red. Green turns to white at 430°, orange turns to yellow 560° and red turns to white at 610°C. Using Carbon Metallic pads, the green paint must turn and preferably the orange as well. Adjust ducting to suit.
