Junction box
In the junction box, the power distribution box and junction box electronics are combined into one unit. The junction box electronics forms the central gateway module in the vehicle.

Brief component description
The junction box is located in the side of the passenger footwell. In order to reach the junction box, the cover must be removed from the passenger footwell trim panel. The junction box consists of the power distribution box and the junction box electronics.

Power distribution box
The fuses and various fixed plug-in relays are located in the junction box power distribution box. The power distribution box is equipped with different relays depending on the vehicle equipment. The fixture for the junction box electronics is located in the junction box.

Junction Box Electronics
The junction box electronics is mechanically and electrically connected to the power distribution box. The junction box electronics combines numerous functions in a single control unit. The junction box electronics is connected via multiple plug connections..

System functions
Numerous functions are provided in the junction box electronics. The junction box electronics processes signals and makes them available to other bus users on the vehicle electrical system. . It also performs control tasks. Depending on the equipment, the following functions or signals can be controlled by the junction box electronics:

  • Gateway
  • Power window regulator
  • Wash/wipe system
  • Central locking system
  • Seat heating
  • Mirror heating and washer jet heating
  • Bi-stable relay
  • DSC button

Further functions of the junction box electronics

Line connection
As well as an electronic function, the junction box electronics also has a connector function. Many of the wires that are connected to the junction box electronics are connected with each other.

Relays
The junction box electronics has internal and external relays. The excitation coils on all relays are continuously supplied with a positive wire. The positive wire for the external relay is provided via the load line, which is to be switched through. The positive wire for the internal relay is provided via the secured supply line of the junction box electronics. All relays are controlled via the negative lead. All internal relays and the relay for wiper stage 1 and wiper stage 2 are located downstream of the fuse on the relevant current path. All other external relays are located in the current path, upstream of the fuse.

Internal relays are:

Relay for the window drives
Relay for the central locking system

The external relays are:

  • Relay for electric motor, rear window wiper
  • Relay for electric motor wiper stage 1 and wiper stage 2
  • Relay for headlight cleaning system
  • Relay for heated rear window
  • Bi-stable relay (deactivation of standby current violation)
