2011-2013 R56 MINI Cooper S Hatchback
2011-2014 R55 MINI Cooper S Clubman
2011-2015 R57 MINI Cooper S Convertible
2012-2015 R58 MINI Cooper S Coupe
2012-2015 R59 MINI Cooper S Roadster
2011-2016 R60 MINI Cooper S Countryman
2013-2016 R61 MINI Cooper S Paceman
Also compatible with the JCW models with the N18 engine (see Note 2 below).
NOTE: For modified MINIs with ECU tune or larger turbos, see Mini Cooper Colder Spark Plug for Modified Minis.
Factory recommends new plugs:
- every 60,000 miles on Cooper S models
- every 18,641 miles on JCW models (see Note 2 below)
In case of multivalve technology, lean burn or direct injection, the flow conditions in the combustion chamber require reliable mixture ignition and optimal cold starting behaviour. BERU spark plugs were specially designed for these special requirements. Where the burn-off resistance and ignition reliability need to be very high, automobile manufacturers such as BMW, Peugeot and Porsche use BERU spark plugs with platinum electrodes.
Technical Features
* Centre and, if required, ground electrodes made of special materials, for example silver for high thermal conductivity or platinum for extremely high resistance to erosion
* Optimal, environmentally friendly combustion: saves fuel and protects the catalytic converter
* Long life, high dependability
* Good cold starting properties
* Excellent mixture access
* First equipment quality
* Pre-gapped
Specifications:
* Thread Size: N 12 x 1.25
* Spanner Size: 14 / bi-hex
* Thread Length: 26.5mm
Note: Recommendation - When changing the spark plugs on vehicles with connector ignition coils, please replace the connector and use spark plug connector grease to fit the connector.
Notes:
- Tightening Torque: 23 +3 Nm or 17+2 ft-lb
- When changing the spark plugs on vehicles with connector ignition coils, use spark plug connector grease to fit the connector.
As modern engines become more efficient and compact, engine components such as Spark Plugs are required to become smaller too. NGK have recognised this and assisted by developing Bi-Hex Spark Plugs.
Traditionally, Spark Plugs have been designed with a hexagonal socket style. The Bi-Hex design provides increased strength compared to a traditional hexagonal design, allowing for a more compact spark plug without compromising strength requirements.
See the Professional Grade Bi-Hex Spart Plug Socket here.
Note 2 (JCW service bulletin):
Maintenance work MINI COOPER S JCW (N18) - reduction spark plug interval
Situation:
Due to current quality testing, the spark plug interval in the new John Cooper Works models with engines N18 have been reduced to the previous interval of 30,000 km (with every engine oil service).
Vehicles concerned:
R55 COOPER S JCW
R56 COOPER S JCW
R56 COOPER S JCW GP2
R57 COOPER S JCW
R58 COOPER S JCW
R59 COOPER S JCW
R60 COOPER SX JCW
R61 COOPER SX JCW
Procedure:
Intervals as stated below refer only to the ECE basic interval.
Country specific deviations may apply. For countries with lower-quality fuel grades, comply with the country-specific intervals.
Change engine oil approximately every 30,000 km/24 months.
- Microfilter: Renew at every engine oil change (approx. 30,000 km).
- Air filter: Renew at every 2nd engine oil change (approx. 60,000 km).
- Spark plugs: Renew at every engine oil change (approx. 30,000 km or 18,641 mi).
Carry out vehicle check every 60,000 km (48 months).
