A faulty ignition coil can cause the engine to idle roughly and misfire under acceleration. In extreme cases, they can cause the engine not to start.

If the computer in your MINI reports a misfire in a specific cylinder, you can move the coil to another cylinder to see if the error changes. This will help you pinpoint which coil may have failed. If one coil fails, there is a good chance the others will follow so it is a good idea to change all of them at the same time.
