It is not common for the rear spring to actually fail, but rather that the various mounting components will wear and loosen, contributing to sags, rattles and squeaks.
Leaf spring U bolts can be damaged by rust, as well as by using the ends as jack stand points! If you must undo them for any reason, it is much easier, and smarter to replace them.
