M31 01 07 Front Axle December 2007 Technical Service SUBJECT Knocking Noise from Front Axle
MODEL Cooper (R56) produced from 8/06 to 4/07
Cooper S (R56) produced from 8/06 to 4/07
SITUATION The customer may report a knocking noise from the front axle which occurs when driving over bumps or uneven road surfaces.
CAUSE Incorrect sway bar bushings fitted for the front sway bar.
CORRECTION On a customer complaint basis, check the front sway bar bushings for a gap between the bushings and the sway bar itself. If any visible gap exists, replace the sway bar bushings.
Most common CV joint failure occurs because the boot protecting the joint has failed allowing water and dirt in and lubricant out. If the boot has failed (ripped, split, or shows a lot of grease around it, the joint needs to be replaced. Usually easiest to just replace the entire half axle with a new or reconditioned one.
