I believe the mans correct. Other wise why wouldn't a Cooper Have spaced rear drums. The out spacing shows up with 7.5 I think. I'm doing a 997 now and they also use smaller CV joint. `

But any way I also think the 7.5 brake is the correct choice if you can't afford 7.9 with four pot calipers. I'd think the new parts for the 7 inch is just as high as 7.5. I tried 7 sets of wheels and tires on my car trying to not run flares. I have a fair idea of what fits under there. I have a set of early flat spoke Cosmics with 165 with 7.5. I could take a picture.

If you have them in your hand and paid for by all means use them.

Yowza, i am not sure why you think the 7" brakes have less of a track width than the 7.5" brakes, afaik they are the same. Also you say the Cosmics are 4" and again afaik you can run a 5" wheel without going past the fender. I know different wheel/tire/brake combos produce different results and maybe i am missing something but am interested as i want to go from drums to discs with 10 x 5" Cosmics on my wagon.

7" disks got a bad rep years ago from Vizard and others, but with modern pads they work quite well on a road car.
I had a set of 7" (998 Cooper) ones on my MiniMatic, with Ferodo Metal King pads and a servo- it stopped well.
997 Cooper calipers had postage stamp sized pads that were useless. However it is easy to mill out the caliper a bit so it takes the bigger 998 Cooper pads.
At least the 7" disks self adjust- which is something the Mini drum brakes don't do. So you are not crawling under the car every month or two.

They are far more reliable than drums.  I'm putting a set on a car I'm working on.

i also have a set up on my 79 austin mini w/geo metro engine....i have cross drilled rotors on mine, an they work fine.....

7" 998 brakes with a modern friction material such as the EBC Green Stuff pads work quite well.  I have used that set-up on my 66 Countryman.

My estate has single leading drum brakes and I was considering upgrading to 7" disk brakes.  I know, why use 7 inch when you can upgrade to 7.5"?  I do not want to change my rims (original Cosmic 4" rims) therefore a 7.5" disk upgrade will extend my tire past the fender.  Will the 7" disks of a cooper provide enough stopping power for my Countryman?
