I got a reply from Hoosier;  they are willing to build a minimum order of 60 tires to the New Zealand spec,(that's 15 sets of 4 tires, or 10 sets of 6 tires) price quoted is 125$ each,(that's cheap), and I would stick to that if I can get most of them sold quickly.  I will keep 12 for myself, so I need about 8 guys that are running on 10" wheels, to step up for 6 tires each.  BOBB says there are no guys running on 10s but him, (and me of course), He is probably right but I thought I would give it a try.  please pass the word.

Cheers

It does not cost a thing to ask the price. I'd like to know. Did you get a price for the ones you may be able to buy here? If you have to wait 6/7 months knowing the price will help you save the money.

For Tyrell(obsolete I think), but probably too wide for my 6.5" wheels. I can still get used slicks from guys like that, but they can be 15 years old, like the last set of Goodyears I got used.  2 out of 5 leaked air, and all were cracked to the nylon plies. They still have 50% tread left, but even I am afraid to go 120 on "em. Ok for Autocross though, That's what's on the car in this pic.  That's Crazy Mike Kimball, telling me to stay off the brakes; "they just slow you down"

Avon make's em in the UK - saw them on a 6-wheel Tyrrell (front 4 are 10" F1 rated). One guy I met at the Laguna Seca Historics goes to races where certain types of cars are and get's used race tires for just some beers. He ships em back to NZ

No, I didn't ask. I am assuming that even if they are willing to ship tires back to the US, the cost would be prohibitive.

Good thinking CooperTune!  Although I think the Rep is willing to drop ship some of the next NZ order to me.  Only prob is they only order about once a year.  I just got an email back from the NZ importer and he said they have tires to last for another 6-7 months at least.

I wish you the best, there are times when things are made for a supplier under contract. I worked for a company that was WD with Federal Mogul since the 20s and our customer number started with two zeros. They were added when they went to 6 diget customer numbers. I became aware they were making some parts for the UK market. Here they were making parts right here in the good old USA shipping them to the UK and I had to buy them from the UK and have them sent right back here. I talked to the salesman, I spoke with the warehouse manager and the plant manager. All told me the same thing no dice. Being a real PITA kind of guy I didn't give up. I found out what the plan manager was into. I sent him a rare example of what he liked. A couple of weeks later the salesman dropped by the shop. He handed me a box and told me that quality control had kicked half a dozen parts out and they were boxed and sent to me. Wink, wink nothing more was said.

Glad to hear that for you - knowing that this is what you've been wanting for track days.  I'm quite curious as to how much these will improve your times - keep us updated, once you finally recieve them....

Finally found a source for Track slicks, for Minis on 10s.  Courtesy of BOBB in Canada,  I have been talking to Hoosier tire rep for weeks trying to find an alternative to the skinny/tall Vintage TD tires.  Other possibilities were limited to  "Little Car" asphalt slicks, F500 slicks and FSAE slicks, All 10" wheel size, but not designed for the much heavier Mini.   BOBB informed me that Hoosier makes a tire for the Mini, that is not listed on their site but are made exclusively for the New Zealand market.  I asked the rep about these and he "admitted" to producing these.  So far I have not determined why we can't get these in North America,(Hoosier being based here). but I will get to the bottom of it.  It may be that they are made-to-order, and require a large order to get them made.  These tires are full slicks, made in at least two compounds, (hard and medium), and are 18.5 tall and 6.8 tread width or thereabouts, and probably have a narrower section width than the bubble-sided Dunlops.

This would be the only real alternative to the Dunlops, which come from England at a price of around 1200$ with shipping/duties for a set of 4.  There is a possibility that I will be able to get a set of the Hoosiers, by piggy-backing on the next New Zealand order, and having them drop-shipped direct from Hoosier.  I figure the more tires that I order, the better the possibilities; any one else interested?
