The gearbox used in all Sprites and Midgets can and typically does leak oil at either the front, rear or both ends. A leak at the rear simply makes a mess in the garage floor, and typically replacing the rear seal (9G204) and bronze bush (2A3325) is the best answer.
Question:
My ribcase, 69 Sprite gearbox is on my workbench. Can this seal be installed right over the shaft without dismantling the gearbox? Filled the gearbox on the bench to the fill hole but when tipped it *pours* out of the rear.
Answer:
Yes, if done carefully to avoid damage to the output shaft it can be done with an assembled gearbox.
But yes, they all leak in this way which is why they're normally only filled once installed and also why when removing the drivetrain it's best to pull the engine by itself so the gearbox can come out without tipping it too much.
