Steel intake manifold from Maniflow. Good choice for Sprites and Midgets since it sets the carb lower relative to the engine/head than the standard aluminum intakes giving you more room to clear the bonnet. Used in conjunction with the short dashpot damper CUD2901 you should have the clearance needed to run an HIF44 on your Spridget.

NOTE: Always be careful to check the clearance of the bonnet when fitting an HIF44 carburetor on Bugeye Sprites and later Sprites & Midgets. Customization and variations in engine mounts and other changes may set the engine higher than normal.

Question:
I have read a forum that has mentioned your 1 1/2 hif38 can be mounted on a 1960 Austin Healey bugeye 948 with the proper intake manifold. I'm in the process of restoring the car, it currently has H1s and was hoping to step it up for more pick up. Is the hif38 zippier than the Hs2's. I've read it's less temperamental. I just want to be sure I can put it on this old car. I am looking to grab as much additional power as possible also. But if the clearance is questionable I might stick to the H2's.
Answer:

It's possible, yes, but in order to make it clear the hood when using the Classic Mini intake manifold you have to use a thin profile dashpot cap - and even then it might not be enough. Maniflow makes an all steel intake for this purpose that is at a lower angle relative to the head: https://www.minimania.com/part/C-AHT669/Sprite-And-Midget-Steel-Intake-Manifold-For-Hif44-175-Inch-Su-Carb

That manifold would likely work with the HIF38's as well since they have the same mount.

However, did you consider going to the later dual HS2 carbs? Those are much easier to live with than the H1's.

Yes, clearance is an issue while the duals fit without issue. Plus, in my opinion, duals sound like a Sprite - HIF carbs do not.
