Classic Austin Mini Radiator 4 Core For Super Cooling
$242.95
Radiator 2-Core Alloy Side Mount | Classic Mini
This radiator is made especially for more powerful and hotter running Mini Cooper engines. Developed using the latest technology and design for increasing air flow, utilizing just two rows of very large cores and V shaped gills. Not only is this radiator much lighter and narrower than the 4 core, it performs as well as the old 4-core. Being of lighter material it can be prone to fin blockage/damage by off road use. Not recommended for such applications. Use C-ARA4444, 4-core instead. May require minor modifications to 2-piece radiator shroud to fit to Mk I/II.
USES SHALLOW CAP GRC111 (not included).

Question:
I have a 1987 Mini with a modified engine that is supposedly bored out to 1380cc which appears to have the original radiator.
It runs "normal" temperature on cool days, but on hot summer days the gauge will show it climbing to almost the max (H on the gauge). The outside temperature really seems to effect the reading. (temperature still rises when driving, not just idling)
Any suggestions on how to make it run cooler on hot summer days?
Answer:
First thing to check is the orientation of the fan. Many people install the plastic fans backwards. In the Classic Mini, the fan PUSHES the air through the radiator. Here's a picture of the listing showing the side that goes towards the radiator:

If the fan is on correctly, you need to next check the thermostat and see if it's actually opening. If it is but it only opens once in boiling water, it's no good. You should replace it with one that opens at a lower temp, like this one: https://www.minimania.com/part/GTS102/Austin-Mini-Thermostat-71c---160f
If neither of those things help then something else is going on and will take a lot more checking.
