This high-efficiency alloy radiator is ideal for all Classic Minis from MK3 to 1990. Will fit earlier cars, if the built-in radiator shroud is removed. For cars 1990-on, modification of the left-hand inner wing/bonnet panel(s) may be required, as the later engines were moved 1/2" further forward than previous models. Weighs only 4.75lbs! Approximate capacity: 1.5 quarts.
Includes the lower front threaded hole with a screw plug to drain the radiator. This bung is also the correct size to fit the C-ARA4445 Radiator Sending Unit for later cars. For bolts used to secure this radiator to the shroud, see ARA1117M, six (6) required per radiator.
NOTES: An aluminum radiator cools better than a copper/brass (stock type) radiator. For example, an aluminum radiator with two (2) rows of 1" tubes is equivalent to a copper/brass radiator with five (5) rows of 1/2" tubes. Aluminum provides high efficiency, is lightweight, and has a longer life compared to copper brass.
Check Before Fitting:
- Take the cowling from the engine and make sure it fits the radiator easily and file out mounting bolt holes if necessary. Use metric mounting bolts HDWB2742M.
- Place cowling in position loosely but do not attach until the radiator has been dropped in place and checked for fitment. Ensure the front of the radiator where the top hose fits clears the lip of the wing to avoid damage.
- You may have to cut the tab from the boomerang shaped upper radiator bracket that sits against the thermostat housing, to allow movement and modification to squeeze the top tank in .
- Make sure the fan clears cowling all round.
- May be difficult to fit on post-1990 Minis, as the the engine is mounted farther forward.
- The engine mounts available also play a part in alignment as well as any previous accident damage repairs.
You shouldn't need an electric fan, no. If you're running an aluminum head without a bypass you shouldn't run a thermostat but run a blanking sleeve instead: https://www.minimania.com/part/11G176/Classic-Austin-Mini-Thermostat-Blanking-Sleeve
Unless you're getting stuck in traffic and sitting and idling a lot, the car should remain cool without an electric fan. A lot depends on the type of driving and what how your cooling system is configured. But an electric fan isn't generally necessary.
