Tightening torque
Non-return valve VANOS to cylinder head (M14 x 1.5): 13 Nm

The Non-Return Valve is connected in series with the solenoid valve for VANOS actuation and its purpose is to prevent the VANOS and its oil channels from running dry.

The Filter in the solenoid valve protects the control piston and the VANOS unit from impurities greater than 100 microns.

The solenoid valve is controlled by the DME and opens the oil channel accordingly for advanced or retarded adjustment of the VANOS. Control of the solenoid valve is defined by characteristic mapping.

The VANOS Cam Sprockets can be found under Mini Cooper Camshaft Sprocket.

NOTE: Valvetronic / VANOS is BMW's version of the variable cam timing technology. Valvetronic varies the amount of valve lift while VANOS varies the duration of the valve opening / closing / overlap.

Question:
Hi hope you can help I own a mini cooper s 2008 r56 N14engine reg yl08 nys. Timing chain has been replaced in the past. But still a brief rattle on startup. Put new vanos valve in but now disconnected not sure which wire goes to goes on to which pin on vanos valve ie yellow wire and white wire. Pins on vanos valve are numbered1and2. Can you please tell me the correct sequence for connection. Also rattle may be down to dirty non return valve. Do i need a new one or can this be taken from crankcase and cleaned. Hope you can help me.
Answer:
Looking at the Bentley manual for the Intake Vanos Solenoid on the N14 engine, it appears the white wire (0.75mm) goes to pin 1 on the solenoid and an orange wire (0.5mm) to pin 2.

Not sure about the non-return valve. It might be worth trying to clean before getting a new one.
