Question:
I have a 1963 Austin Mini with a 90's engine, it looks to be the original smiths from the 60s. The temperature gauge is not working when I turn on the ignition it moves slightly. How do I check the sensor or could it be the stabilizer, where is the stabilizer located? I just purchased the car. I am told that it did, not sure what sender it is. Is there any way of checking the sender?
Answer:
The temp senders for the Minis were very different over the years.
All that is important is that the sender matches the gauge it is sending to. An early car that had a gauge that just flicked straight to the reading uses the GTR101MS sensor.
If the gauge needle moves slowly across it had a voltage stabilizer fitted and used GTR104 are sensitive to voltage - so a bad stabilizer would cause a bad reading, provided that the sender itself isn't bad. You could test it with known temperature with an ohm meter, but the common diagnosis is just to replace the components.
