OEM oil filter, fits Gen1 MINI Cooper and 'S' models. This is the same oil filter used by the MINI dealership service department. Includes oil filter cartridge and O-ring. Capacity for oil change with filter is 4.5 ltr, or 4.7 qts.

Fits the following models:

  • 2002-2006 R50 MINI Cooper Hatchback and R53 Cooper S Hatchback
  • 2005-2008 R52 MINI Cooper and Cooper S Convertibles

Get this item as part of an Oil Change Kit or see oil filters for other MINI models here.

When vehicle is used under severe driving conditions, the engine oil and filter should be changed more often. Examples of severe driving conditions that affect oil change frequency include:

  • Repeated short distance driving
  • Driving in extremely cold weather
  • Driving on rough and/or muddy roads
  • Repeated trailer towing

NOTE: The hole at the bottom of this filter will appear much smaller than the shaft in the filter base - this is NORMAL and CORRECT. If you press the filter into the base, the hole will 'stretch' over the shaft. This is a design feature to ensure a tight seal so the oil does not bypass the filter.

For a kit including this filter and the factory MINI Cooper drain plug, see NMK1078.

If you have an early MINI built before 07/2004, take a look at this article regarding the different oil cannister cover design.

MINI Cooper Oil filter to  fit 2007+ R56 MINI Cooper and Cooper S can be found here (G2NME1050) .

For additional protection, take a look at our Magnetic Oil Drain Plug.

To reset the oil change interval in your MINI, see oil service reset.

See NME1056 for a non-factory alternative filter made by MANN Filters.

Filter change tips:

  • Remove the oil drain plug (13mm) and let the oild drain out. It helps to 'loosen' the canister when you drain the oil to help drain the oil fron the filter (for less mess).
  • You can use our oil Filter Socket (NME1051) or purchase a 'low profile' 36mm socket from the local auto parts store and use it with a ratchet to remove the canister.
  • Make sure you replace the o-ring with the new one supplied with the oil filter - apply a LIBERAL coat of fresh oil on the o-ring when you install it.
  • One end of the oil filter has a plastic base. When the filter is in the canister (housing), the plastic is showing. When the filter is installed in the base, the plastic does not show.
  • Before installing the filter, push the filter onto the base until it 'pops' into place. Then remove it and push the filter into the canister (housing) until it 'pops' into place. Once the filter is seated into the canister, you can assemble it onto the base.
  • Be CAREFUL not to cross-thread the canister when installing.
  • Remember to use synthetic motor oil. MINI recommends 5W-40 or 5W-30 FULL SYNTHETIC motor oil.
  • Tighten the drain plug and the oil filter to 25 Nm (18 ft-lb). Start the engine and check for oil pressure. Don't forget to check for leaks too!
  • And darn it, dispose of the used oil and filter properly, please. And wipe that oil off the driveway / garage before you track it into the house!

Remember, the best oil filter is the oil filter as supplied by the factory. The oil filter can directly impact the life of your engine and thus the oil filter as used by the factory is the best option to maintain your engine.

Mini Cooper Oil Change Tip & Hints - R50/52/53 Cooper & S
Created: October 11, 2011
Frequently, the canister cover will be very difficult to break free.  Use a breaker bar with CAUTION!  You may need a low profile' socket due to the limited space available. If you loosen the filter canister cover enough to break the seal, it will help drain the oil from the filter as you drain the oil pan.  Less mess later! When replacing the O-ring, save the old one just in case (will explain later). When replacing the O-ring on the canister cover, make sure you lubricate the O-ring with PLENTY of fresh oil before you install it, and lubricate again after it is in place.  If you fail to do this, the O-ring will bunch up and cause a leak!
