Cooper S Performance Clutch & Flywheel Upgrade kits for 2002-2006 R53 MINI Cooper S.

Stage 1 Cooper S Performance Clutch Kit offers a nice upgrade from the factory setup for the 'sport minded' MINI driver.

Features an integrally molded carbon-based, high performance organic lining that offers smooth engagement and excellent life. This lining has an integrally molded steel backing for strength under high clamp loads and temperatures. Best for street and limited track/off-road usage.

This 13 pound flywheel from S.P.E.C. is half the weight of the stock flywheel.

SPEC billet flywheels are manufactured and developed for specific driving environments and recommended based on how each car reacts to changes in rotating mass. SPEC flywheels are NOT a one-fits-all lightweight flywheel, though they can be used for an array of driving habits and racing/high performance applications. Manufactured from only the highest quality steel and aluminum, they are the only flywheels on the market manufactured to a .001 machine tolerance, guaranteeing a flat seating surface for the clutch and smooth rotational qualities for perfect balance and extended engine life.

Unless otherwise instructed by written notice from SPEC, follow manufacturer’s instructions when installing clutch and flywheel products. SPEC recommends that all bolts be inspected before re-installation, and any bolts that have been removed and re-torqued multiple times replaced. SPEC will not warrant any component failure due to install error.

How to find the right Clutch Replacement for your MINI Cooper

Identifying the correct MINI Factory Clutch Kit can be confusing. The part number varies depending on the production year, Cooper or Cooper S, and engine type. The chart below should help you find the correct kit. The clutch on the Mini is designed to function properly at a given horsepower figure (plus some headroom).  As the Mini engine gets upgraded producing more power than stock, the increased horsepower can overpower the stock clutch's clamping force and/or the friction material on the clutch disc.  This can cause excessive clutch slip and the net result is a burnt clutch making the Mini non-operational.

The clutch operates using brake fluid. It draws off the brake fluid reservoir via a black tube on the side. Fluid flows from the reservoir into the cylinder above the clutch pedal (when there is a negative pressure). Then when the pedal is pushed the pedal cylinder pushes fluid through the tube into the clutch slave cylinder which activates the clutch.
