Question:
I have an old Cooper S and am not the original owner. Pulled the motor as I had a shift problem 2-3 knuckle assembly was off 1 spline. I was able to bolt up the existing remote to check what was going on with the gearchange. Anyway installed everything and tried to bolt up shift housing dogbone undone, motor mounts loose and the front short bolts went in fine but the longer rear ones were on a bind and I stripped the threads on 1 longer one. Heli-coiled but still have the bind. Not sure if a new used housing will solve the problem.
Answer:
Sorry to hear of your problems but to be honest the remote housing it very unlikely to be your issue.  When installing the shift housing is should be possible to mate the shifter to diff even without any bolt in place.
