When the brake sensor light on the dash is illuminated, it indicates the brake pad has reached end-of-life and needs to be replaced.  Brake wear sensors are located on the outside brake pad in the front left and rear right brake calipers.

The brake wear sensor is a consumable item that needs to be replaced when the warning light is on. It is best to replace both front and rear sensor at the same time. Even though it can be re-used if it hasn't worn through, the repeated heat cycle makes them very brittle and difficult to remove without damaging them. Have both available when you service the brakes.

MINI also recommends that the brake rotors be replaced when new pads are installed. This is because turning used rotors results in reduced mass, between the metal that has worn off and the metal that is removed when turning them. Reduced mass means less heat capacity and a greater chance of warping.

When replacing the brake wear sensors, we recommend that you install the new as you remove the old. Starting at the brake pads, as you remove the old sensor from the clips holding them in place, install the new sensor into that clip. Work your way all the way to the connector installing the new as you remove the old. This way, the sensor is routed exactly in the same manner as the factory.

Once the sensors have been replaced, perform the following reset procedure:
